15:1 ratio in US now for gas station vs fast charging station

The United States has made significant strides in expanding its fast electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. According to data from the US Department of Energy (DOE), nearly 600 new fast EV charging stations were activated during Q1 2024, marking a 7.6% increase from the end of the previous year. This boost in charger availability is a positive development for EV drivers, potentially alleviating both charger anxiety and range anxiety.


Here are some key points about the current state of EV charging stations in the US:


1. Fast Charger Availability: The US now boasts approximately one fast EV charging station for every 15 gas stations nationwide. This significant improvement signals a decrease in the number of "charging deserts"—areas with little or no EV charging infrastructure. Historically, these regions posed challenges for EV drivers, especially outside busy metropolitan areas where charging stations were prioritized.

2. Funding and Initiatives: The increase in fast charger availability was partly driven by the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program, which provides funding to states for deploying new EV chargers and enhancing the reliability of existing ones. To qualify for program funds, charging station projects must be non-proprietary and use open-access payment methods. Additionally, their location near Federal Highway Administration "alternative fuel corridors" is essential to improve accessibility for electric and hydrogen-dependent vehicles.


3. Tesla's Role: Tesla plays a significant role in the charging infrastructure landscape, responsible for approximately one in every four fast chargers currently available. Despite a slump in EV demand since the pandemic boom, Tesla recognizes that increased charger availability benefits the overall EV market. Chargers also contribute to maintaining Tesla's image as the company faces challenges related to product development, layoffs, and safety investigations.


4. Charger Reliability: While the expansion of charging stations is promising, it's essential to address reliability. Local electric grid faults can disrupt charging, affecting a station's "charger uptime." This issue is particularly frustrating for drivers experiencing extreme temperatures, which impact EV battery capacity. Efforts like the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program aim to enhance charger uptime, but creative solutions are still needed to avoid broken chargers.


In summary, the US is making significant progress in building a robust EV charging network, making electric vehicles more accessible and convenient for drivers across different regions and lifestyles.
