Volvo work with CATL to bring used battery new life

Volvo and CATL have joined forces to tackle the challenge of old electric vehicle (EV) batteries. Their mission? To recycle these retired batteries and give them a new lease on life.

As electric vehicle sales continue to climb, many batteries will eventually reach the end of their useful life. But Volvo believes it has a solution. Here's what they're up to:

1. Recycling Partnership: Volvo and CATL are teaming up to recycle old and scrapped EV batteries. These batteries will be disassembled, and over 90% of the key materials—including nickel, cobalt, and lithium—will be reclaimed.

2. New EV Batteries: CATL will then use these recycled materials to create brand-new EV batteries. These batteries will power Volvo's upcoming electric cars, contributing to a more sustainable future.

3. Commitment to Carbon Reduction: Volvo has been making significant strides in reducing its carbon footprint. Last year, they sold over 113,000 fully electric vehicles, accounting for 16% of their total vehicle sales. This year, with models like the affordable EX30 gaining traction, they expect even more growth. Volvo aims for EVs to make up 50% of total sales by the end of next year as they work toward their ambitious goal of an all-electric future by 2030¹\.

By recycling old EV batteries, Volvo and CATL are not only extending the lifespan of these components but also minimizing their environmental impact. It's a win-win for sustainability and the planet!
